Hebrew University students were on strike again today in a continuing dispute over a rise in tuition fees. The dispute had led to the appointment of a committee headed by Supreme Court Justice Simon Agranot, which had recommended an increase in tuition fees from 250 to 400 pounds per semester.
When the Minister of Education Zalman Aranne approved the increase, the students organized a protest in front of the Prime Minister’s office. In response, Premier David Ben Gurion met with the students and persuaded them to return to their classes on his promise that the matter would be re-studied.
Last Thursday the students met again and rejected an appeal from the Prime Minister, who this time asked postponement of the walk-out for two weeks during which he said he would study the students’ demands. He explained he had not been able to do so until now because of his work load.
Meron Benvenisti, chairman of the Students Association, who had opposed the breaking off of re-negotiations and resumption of the strike, resigned as soon as the students voted to resume their walk-out.
