The Board of Governors of the Chicago committee for Israel bonds, unanimously voted the Most Reverend Bernard J. Sheil, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, as the “Man of the Year” to be honored by the entire Jewish community for his leadership in humanitarian causes and his ardent support of the State of Israel.

This will be the first time that a non-Jew and a high-ranking Church leader will be honored as “The Man of the Year” by the Jews of Chicago. Archbishop Sheil will be the guest of honor at the “Man of the Year” dinner which will be held in Chicago on Nov. 7, when more than 2,000 leaders of the Jewish community and outstanding civic and national figures will join in paying tribute to the church leader who is revered by all faiths for his outstanding achievements in religious and communal affairs.

A long-time supporter of the establishment of the State of Israel, Archbishop Sheil has closely identified himself with the campaign for Israel bonds. He is not only a purchaser of Israel bonds, but last winter he took the initiative in inviting Jewish and non-Jewish leaders to a meeting at his residence where more than $500,000 in Israel bonds were sold.
