Dr. Israel Goldstein, co-chairman of the World Con-federation of General Zionists, asserted today, in a report on an eight-month world tour, President Nasser of the United Arab Republic was “doomed to failure” in his “attempt to build up a solid Afro-Asian front against Israel.”
Dr. Goldstein, who visited many of the newly-established Asian and African nations, explained that this attempt ran “counter to the realism interests of the people concerned. ” He noted that in countries “such as Burma, Ghana and Liberia, Israelis have established economic enterprises jointly with the local governments.”
Declaring that Israel’s practical help and advice “are the more acceptable because they come from a small country, ” the Zionist leader added that “such practical cooperation built on mutual benefits is a sound basis for good relations between Israel and Afro-Asian countries.”
Referring to “remote outposts of Jewish life” which he had visited, he reported that “the largest common denominator between all of these Jewish communities is Judaism and Israel. The State of Israel has brought new verve, pride and spiritual content into their lives as Jews. ” He added, however, that “in the small communities the struggle for Jewish survival is difficult. The number one need is for Jewish teachers”
Dr. Goldstein said he had found in talks with Prince Mikasa of Japan, U’Nu of Burma, Prime Minister Nehra of India and the Shah of Persia, “an appreciation of Judaism and a deep respect for Israel. “He said that Nehru “hopes some day to be helpful in bringing about peaceful relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors.”
