Bishop John W. Lord of the Boston area Methodist Church extended an invitation to rabbis to preach the Sunday sermon in some 400 Methodist churches throughout New England.
The Bishop said he decided to invite rabbis to Methodist pulpits “to demonstrate how strongly we feel about the concept of the brotherhood of all people.” The idea, he stated, was motivated by the anti-Semitic outbursts here and overseas. “Police action is necessary but so is the expression of abhorrence of such extremes by Christian groups.” he declared.
He said such expressions of interfaith good will were not unusual, explaining that in 1959, “we held our annual New England Methodist Conference in Temple Ohabei Shalom at the Invitation of our Jewish friends in Boston.”
