The Senate Foreign Relations Committee today refused to accept a State Department stand that America is legally obligated to compensate Austrian Nazis and pro-Hitler collaborators for assets they lost during World War II.
The Committee voted to continue postponement of ratification of a treaty with Austria which would give Austrian Nazis $5,150, 000 as compensation for properties seized by the United States during the war. All Committee members present at the meeting, including Chairman J.W. Fulbright, questioned the legal obligation of American taxpayers to compensate Nazis.
