Satisfaction with the present state of relations between the United States and Israel was expressed here today following the departure yesterday for the United States of Mrs. Golda Meir. Israel’s Foreign Minister.
Informed sources here indicated that some of the promises received by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion during his recent visit to Washington are already in the stage of negotiation for early implementation. Others, which were less promising, are still being discussed.
It was also indicated that an economic aid project of major importance had already been approved in principle in Washington, On the other hand, it was reported reliably, Israel has failed to attain American support of its desire to affiliate in some fashion with European or Atlantic economic organizations. The State Department in Washington was understood to desire to avoid possible complications which might develop from such American support.
Mrs. Meir, who will remain in the United States for about five weeks, and will also visit Canada, said in a statement before her departure that she would meet with State Department officials including Secretary of State Christian Herter and Undersecretary C. Douglas Dillon. She will tour the two countries on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal and the Israel Bond Organization.
