An appeal for greater participation by lay leaders in religious affairs was made tonight by Senator Herbert H. Lehman, the former New York State Governor, at a dinner held here by the Synagogue Council of America. Mr. Lehman called for the development of greater leadership resources to meet increased demands for leadership on all levels–local, national and global.
Rabbi Julius Mark, vice-president of the Council, announced that a delegation from the Council will soon visit President Eisenhower to present him with the Synagogue Council’s Judaism and Peace Award. A message from President Eisenhower was read at the dinner by Robert Gray, of Washington, secretary of the President’s Cabinet.
Senator Jacob K. Javits addressed the dinner, and presentations were made of the first annual Synagogue Statesman awards, for outstanding service to American Jewry. The recipients were Samuel Friedman of Miami Beach, a leader in Conservative Judaism; Max Stern of New York, a national leader among Orthodox Jews. and the late Ruth and Marvin Silberman, noted Reform leaders. Mr. Silberman’s brother, Samuel J. Silberman, of New York, accepted the award.
