Large units of Israel paratroops taking part in a combined air-sea-land operation exercise ran into an unexpected difficulty during last night and early this morning–unusually heavy showers.

The showers, which were welcomed by local farmers if not by the paratroopers, came after a spell of near-summer weather, including two days of hot, dry weather. The down-pour began near midnight when the paratroopers, who had been dropped several hours previously “behind enemy lines,” were marching toward their targets.

Supported by additional units and supplies airdropped to a runway prepared by units which had jumped earlier, the force carried out a series of “attack” on “enemy” installations. When the assignment is completed, the paratroopers will move to nearby caches where they will be “evacuated” by waiting naval units.
