Samuel M. Levitas, editor of “The New Leader” magazine, who was active in combatting Communism, died here last night at the age of 66. He was also active in the Jewish Socialist movement and served as a member of the administrative council of the Jewish Daily Forward, largest Yiddish newspaper published here.
Born in Kiev, Mr. Levitas studied in Chicago as a young man before returning to Russia in 1917 when he was elected Vice-Mayor of Vladivostok. After being jailed several times because of his anti-Bolshevik activities, Mr. Levitas fled abroad and settled permanently in the United States in 1923.
