Rabbi Eliezer Poupko, a leading Orthodox rabbi and formerly an honorary president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, died here yesterday of a heart attack at the age of 75. He was spirituals leader of the Aitz Chaim Congregation here at the time of his death.
Born in Russia, Rabbi Poupko was ordained in Volozin in 1908 and served as spiritual leader of various communities in Russia until he was sentenced to a Siberian prison for defying the religious policy of the Soviet Union. He came to the United States in 1931, when U.S. rabbis secured his release, and assumed his post as spiritual leader of Aitz Chaim congregation in 1943.
