Postponement of Election of New Hebrew U. President is Opposed

A special meeting of the board of governors of Hebrew University called for November 6 to elect a new president may be postponed Until the spring, it was indicated today.

Most of the British and Israeli board members favor a postponement but George Wise of New York, chairman of the board, told correspondents that such a move would be “government interference in the affairs of an autonomous body.” He said he had first heard the suggestion for postponement from Education Minister Abba Eban.

The reference to Mr. Eban evoked some surprise. It was understood that he had expressed his objections to the extraordinary meeting in his capacity as an honorary member of the board of governments and not as Education Minister. Mr. Wise was mentioned last spring as a candidate for the University presidency.
