Five thousand striking income tax, customs and other revenue officials returned to work today, but 6,000 other Government workers, employed at hospitals in non-medical capacities, went out on strike. The hospital employees are demanding higher wages.
The 5,000 who returned to work, ending a walk-out that began five days ago, called off their strike on the assurance that no punitive action will be taken against those who had left their Jobs.
The end of the strike by the 5,000 came after some of those involved, employed at Lydda Airport and in the customs division of the Port of Tel Aviv, had voted to call on their own central committee to end the work stoppage. Others of the strikers, at Jerusalem and Haifa, then announced they would accept a Government proposal to investigate their demands for special compensation for certain special or unpleasant duties.
