Menachem Beigin’s leadership of the Herut Party — despite Mr. Beigin’s official resignation from his chairmanship yesterday –won a narrow victory over the party’s opposition at an all-night session which was not adjourned until 3:30 o’clock this morning. The stormy dispute was over the election of the party’s Permanent Committee. When the battle was over, and convention votes were counted, Mr. Beigin’s group had won by 252 to 249 against the Herut opposition, led by Eliezer Shostak and Shmuel Tamir.
The final showdown between the two factions is expected tomorrow, when the convention, being held all this week at Ramat Gan, near this city, is to elect the party’s central committee. Mr. Beigin’s backers said today that, if the “spirit” shown in last night’s meeting is evidenced again tomorrow, Mr. Beigin would withdraw his resignation and resume leadership of the party, Some members of the opposition declared, on the other hand, they would not permit Mr. Shostak and Mr. Tamir to join the central committee unless the opposition faction can muster a majority.
