King Hussein of Jordan, scheduled to meet Prime Minister Harold Wilson Monday to urge Britain to support the demand for Israel’s withdrawal from the territories it has occupied which were formerly ruled by Jordan, was not expected to get much encouragement.
The attitude of the British Government was forcefully expressed over the weekend by Minister of State Patrick Gordon Walker, who said in a speech that “it is unlikely that Israel will voluntarily give up territory she has won without some firm guarantee that in future she will be allowed by her neighbors to live in peace.”
According to British diplomatic correspondents, Hussein will be reminded, in his meetings with Government leaders, that Britain does not expect Israel to withdraw without securing permanent preliminary guaranties. The Hussein-Wilson talks, according to one source, will be a first step towards a Jordanian agreement to open negotiations with Israel.
