Thunderous applause and a standing ovation last night greeted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, at Philharmonic Hall, in the first of 20 fund-raising concerts that will take the ensemble to 15 cities in the United States and Canada over a 24-day period. The 110-member musical group played to a capacity audience under the direction of William Steinberg, with pianist Rudolf Serkin as soloist.
The 2,800-capacity hall in Lincoln Center was sold out a week in advance of last night’s program. Proceeds of the tour will go to the Israel Emergency Fund. After two more concerts in New York, the orchestra will perform in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Denver, St. Louis, Cleveland, Louisville, Ky., and Toronto
