A suggestion that both the United States and the Soviet fleets quit the Mediterranean in the interests of peace in the area was reportedly made by the Yugoslavian delegation at a conference here of the “progressive” (Communist) parties of the Mediterranean nations. The conference, held behind closed doors, was called to consider the situation in the Mediterranean region following the “imperialist aggression” of last June. The Yugoslavian proposal was rejected by most delegates who regard the presence of a Soviet fleet in the Mediterranean as a “safeguard to peace.”
