Jordan asked tonight for an urgent meeting of the Security Council to deal with Israel’s “violation” of the armistice agreements in its plans to stage its Independence Day parade on May 2 in East Jerusalem.
The request was made by Jordanian Ambassador Muhammad el-Farrah in a letter to the current Council president, Jacob Malik of the Soviet Union. Jordan complained in the letter that the parade would be in “open and flagrant violation” also of earlier Council and General Assembly resolutions on the status of Jerusalem. The Council will probably be called into session on Saturday.
(The United States Government has no intention of participating in the parade, in keeping with the established policy under which Jerusalem is not recognized as the capital of Israel, State Department officials said today in Washington.)
Israel Ambassador Yosef Tekoah had two meetings today with Secretary-General U Thant. Both meetings, it was learned, concerned the dispute over the Independence Day parade.
