The United States Atomic Energy Commission announced today that the potentialities of nuclear powered energy centers in the Middle East were being studied by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. An agency spokesman said that Oak Ridge will explore the technical and economic feasibility of using nuclear power plants for producing fresh water and electricity in agro-industrial production complexes for development of arid regions of the Middle East. The study is consistent with previous feasibility research carried out jointly by Israel and the U.S. It is to a degree a response to a Senate resolution of 1967 calling on the U.S. Government to consider nuclear energy as a means of promoting regional cooperation in the Middle East and seeking Arab-Israel peace.
