Interior Minister Moshe Shapiro, leader of the National Religious Party, told a meeting of the party that Israeli religious groups must end their internal rifts because the mergers of leftist and labor parties could ultimately curtail the influence of the religious bloc.

He charged that the mergers were not based on ideas or ideals but only a determination to have “total control” of the state and that this might “jeopardize” the democratic foundation of Israel.
