A delegation of Canadian Arabs has urged Mitchell Sharp, Sec. of State for External Affairs to have Canada act independently of the United Nations to promote direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs living in the Israel-occupied territories. The six-member delegation headed by Dr. Ibrahim Salti, president of the Canadian Arab Federation, reported that it had received a “very sympathetic” hearing. Its aim, he said, was to achieve recognition for Palestinian Arabs, “the people Israel would have to negotiate with to achieve a Middle East settlement.” Dr. Salti said the Palestinians wanted equal rights with Jews in a democratic, “secular” Israel.
