A pledge by President Charles de Gaulle of France that he “would play an even-handed role” between Israel and the Arab states in any Big Four talks has prompted President Nixon to broaden his still cautious approach to such a parley, syndicated columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak reported today. Mr. Nixon exacted a promise from Gen. de Gaulle at their Paris meeting last month that he would not advocate of the Arab cause. Without such assurances, they said, the Nixon Administration would not enter into Four Power talks “with the cards stacked against Israel.”
