A cabinet minister declared yesterday that the status of Jerusalem cannot be negotiated with King Hussein of Jordan or with anyone else no matter how powerful or friendly to Israel they may be. Moshe Kol, Minister of Tourism and Development, spoke at the opening of a new tourism center. He said, however, that Israel was prepared to give “a special and honored place” in Jerusalem to the churches and holy sites of all religions. “But there will be no political status for foreigners in the capital of Israel,” he added. The ceremonies were attended by Jerusalem’s Mayor Teddy Kollek who expressed his “private opinion” earlier this week that an independent Arab Jerusalem and an independent Jewish Jerusalem could exist side-by-side if peace came.
