Julius Katchen, an American concert pianist who made his debut at the age of 10 and performed as a child with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, died in Paris yesterday of cancer at the age of 42. His body will be flown to New York. Burial services will be held at Temple Beth Miriam in Elberon, N.J. Mr. Katchen interrupted his career as a child prodigy to attend high school and college. He was graduated from Haverford College in 1945 and accepted a fellowship from the French Government. He made Paris his permanent residence and gave most of his concerts in Europe. In recent years he specialized in the music of Brahms.
