Resolution to Be Introduced Urging Nixon to Ask Soviets to Withdraw from Egypt

Sen. Hugh Scott, of Pennsylvania, the Senate Republican Minority Leader, disclosed here today that he will introduce a resolution on the Senate floor tomorrow urging President Nixon to call on the Soviet Union to withdraw all Russian personnel from Egypt as “a major step toward the encouragement of peace in the Middle East.” The text of the resolution, which is cosponsored by Sen. Walter F. Mondale, Democrat of Minnesota, was read by Sen. Scott at the founding convention of the newly formed American Zionist Federation here. “Passage of this resolution will hopefully help in a manner designed to encourage peace rather than armed escalation and all-out war,” Sen. Scott said. Declaring the Middle East situation to be crucial “at this point in time,” Sen. Scott told the convention that he would urge President Nixon to approve Israel’s long-standing request for the sale of more Phantom jets and other combat aircraft on long term credit.
