Israeli warplanes pounded Egyptian targets in the Suez Canal zone and along the Gulf of Suez today for five hours and returned safely to their bases. Egyptian and Israeli artillery battled across the canal. An Israeli soldier was wounded by fire across the Lebanese border. An Israeli patrol returned the fire. The Israel Air Force reportedly employed 26 U.S. Phantom and Skyhawk jets in today’s assaults on Egyptian targets, according to Cairo. The planes concentrated on the northern section of the canal and ranged as far south as Zaafarana on the Gulf of Suez. Cairo claimed artillery hits on two Israeli tanks and armored columns and bunkers near El Balah on the canal.
