Dr. Friedrich Karl Vialon, former Secretary of State in the West German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, went on trial in Coblenz today on charges of having committed perjury when he testified at a war crimes trial several years ago that he knew nothing about the extermination of Jews during World War II. Vialon, 66, headed the finance department under the Reich Commission for the East during the war. He served as registrar of Jewish property in the German administration in Riga from 1942-44. Vialon’s wartime role was attacked on West German television in 1966. Documents concerning the extermination of thousands of Jews were displayed, bearing what was alleged to be Vialon’s signature. The documents were made available to the court by Soviet and East German authorities.
