Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Elan today described the late Judge Joseph M. Proskauer as “a classic figure in American Jewry” who “represented the highest personal qualities of tolerance, justice and truth together with a strong American patriotism and a frank and ardent devotion to the Jewish people.” Eban’s statement was read at Temple Emanu-El today during funeral services for the late judge, philanthropist and political advisor who died Friday at the age of 94. Referring to Proskauer’s “unforgettable contribution to American-Israel relations at the most crucial periods of our nation’s rebirth as a sovereign state.” Eban’s message stated: “I shall always cherish the memory of his good humor, his fidelity in friendship, the incisive and pungent quality of his mind and behind it all, his warm and compassionate heart.” More than 1,000 people attended the services.
