Kurt Waldheim, Secretary General of the United Nations, sent a cable late last night to Israel Premier Golda Meir expressing his sorrow at the death of the Israeli athletes. His cable stated: “Madame Prime Minister, I wish to express to you and through you to the people of Israel my profound sorrow at the tragedy which has taken place at Munich. Despite all the efforts of those who sought to avert this senseless disaster, death has come to all of the Israeli athletes who were kidnapped. Words cannot express the revulsion and shock which all people of goodwill must feel at this appalling event. I ask you to extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims.”
