Funeral services were held today at Temple Emanu-El for Nathan M. Ohrbach, founder and former owner of the Ohrbach’s department stores, who died here Sunday at the age of 87. Mr. Ohrbach was born in Vienna and at first wanted to be a lawyer. But when a friend he was helping as a women’s-hat salesman sold his millinery store, Mr. Ohrbach took it over.
He had arrived in the United States at age 2 and spent his youth in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. He was at various times a trustee of the Federation of Jewish Charities, treasurer of the American Jewish Committee, vice-president and trustee of Montefiore Hospital, and general chairman and vice-president of the Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America.
Israel’s Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir proposed last night that Israeli universities meet their financial needs by carrying out joint fundraising campaigns. In an address to a visiting United Jewish Appeal mission from Baltimore he said such an undertaking would ensure the optimal distribution of funds according to each institution’s needs.
New York State Supreme Court Justice Richard Merrill Rosenbaum, elected yesterday as Republican state chairman effective Jan. 1, will become the first Jewish chairman of either of the two major parties’ state committees. Justice Rosenbaum, a lawyer of Penfield, a suburb of Rochester, is a member of Temple Beth El and a director of the Jewish Home and Infirmary. In assuming the party post, he will be leaving the 14-year judgeship to which he was elected two years ago.
