Major John V.Lindsay reported to the officers of the Greater New York, Conference on Soviet Jewry on his recent meetings with the Mayor of Moscow in Tokyo and with Soviet Jews in Israel. Conference Chairman Stanley. Lowell urged Lindsay to accept the invitation extended to him by the Mayor of Moscow to visit that city. Lindsay said he would consider it and added, “If I am in a position to accept this invitation, I would make it clear that I will take up the issue of Soviet Jewry.”
Among other steps Lindsay agreed to take was to include in the city’s legislative program support of the Jackson amendment, enlist support of the Conference of Mayors, encourage individual mayors to undertake efforts on behalf of Soviet Jewry in concert with their local communities, and to contact the heads of corporations in New York City dealing with the Soviet Union to encourage them to raise the issue and to do whatever possible to help Soviet Jews.
