United States Defense Secretary Harold Brown denied that sales of F-15 jets to Saudi Arabia and F-5s to Egypt would after the Middle East military balance to Israel’s disfavor. He told the press here at the end of a four-day visit that Israel would be able to defend herself against any combination of Arab foes until at least 1983.
Brown confirmed that the Carter Administration would soon submit to Congress a package of proposed arms sales to Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. “We believe that package does not change the balance,” he said. The sales to Israel include F-16s, described by Brown as smaller than the F-15, but an extremely capable air superiority fighter.
