Emunah Women leaders, meeting with Carter Administration officials at the White House, urged support for “effective legislation to ban Nazi groups that preach genocide and exploit the privileges of democracy for anti-democratic ends.” Toby Willig, national president of Emunah, said in a press statement after the meeting that “the legacy of the Holocaust prohibits us from ignoring the gutter anti-Semitism manifested in Skokie and elsewhere.”
Mrs. Willig headed the 22-member delegation of Emunah Women, part of the World Religious Zionist Organization, in a 90-minute discussion with Robert Lipshutz, President Carter’s Counsel; Presidential aide on human rights Joyce Starr; and Joseph N. McBride, economist and commercial officer in the State Department’s Office for Israeli-Arab Affairs. Mrs. Bernice Mermelstein, of Brooklyn, Emunah’s national board chairman, and former national president Charlotte Dachs, of Flushing, NY were among the participants.
Mrs. Willig also condemned the “incredibly cruel sentences of exile meted out to two heroic Soviet Jewish activists, Vladimir Slepak and Ida Nudel.” She urged the Administration to help effect their release and other Soviet Jewish activists who want to rejoin their families in Israel.
