A public committee comprising veterans of the War for Independence and 101st Unit, the first Israeli army commando unit which carried out raids against terrorist bases across the border in the 1950s, has been established to encourage public alertness against acts of terrorism.
Shlamo Baum, the committee spokesman, himself a famous figure from the 1950s when he was one of the heroes of special anti-terrorist operations, said the public committee was set up because its members feel that the current campaign against terrorists and methods to prevent terrorist acts are neither adequate nor successful. The committee, therefore, is providing an incentive to encourage the public to be on the alert.
Having received a large sum of money from an anonymous donor, the committee is offering IL 50,000 for information leading to the arrest of a terrorist and IL 10,000 for discovering an explosive device. The awards, to be given upon the recommendation of the police, will be paid to anyone regardless of religion or nationality, Baum said.
