Film star Ingrid Bergman says the cinema isn’t what it used to be. In Israel on a strictly private and incognito visit, Ms. Bergman, who was rumored to have been picked to play the part of the late Golda Meir in a film of her life, appeared to have denied the report by insisting that she had now retired from the screen.

Ms. Bergman said she was in Israel on the first stop of a round-the-world tour to see places she had always wanted to visit but had not the time to do till now. She said that although she was not religious she has been deeply moved by visits to the Old City of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Yad Veshem Holocaust Memorial.
