Meteorologists in Galilee say they have this year recorded the lowest level of rainfall since 1911, when precipitation measurement began to be recorded in the region. The shortage of rain this year has not yet been officially declared a drought, although weather forecasters and farmers say there is little hope of sufficient rain during the rest of the winter making up for the shortfall and saving crops.

In addition to the shortage of rain, which has dried up the fields, banana and avocado growers in Galilee and the Jordan valley say an unexpected cold spell during recent nights has destroyed much of their crop.
