Beirut International Airport was closed today after some 40 rockets and shells slammed into the runway and terminal building areas and nearby slum district. Four people were reported killed and about 24 injured, including a U.S. marine on duty at the airport at the time.

The barrage was aimed at the airport area from the leftwing Druze positions in the hills east of the city. Israel Defense Force personnel moved into the area to half the shelling. Beirut sources said it was hoped the airport would reopen to traffic by tomorrow morning.
