News Brief

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak warned that aid pledged by the United States to implement last year’s Wye agreement is crucial to the peace process, the Jerusalem Post reported. “Without such aid, it will be more difficult to move forward to the most crucial stages of the peace process,” Barak told visiting delegates of the United Jewish Communities on Wednesday night. Congress has not appropriated the $1.2 billion for Israel and $400 million for the Palestinians that the Clinton administration requested to help implement Wye. On Thursday, President Clinton criticized Congress for its “failure to pass a bill that would meet our obligations to the Middle East peace process.”
