Martin Peretz, longtime editor in chief of The New Republic, sold his remaining shares in the pro-Israel magazine, The New York Observer reported. Peretz, 68, sold his 25 percent share to the Canadian company CanWest Global Communications on Tuesday. In 2001, hedge-fund billionaire turned mega-philanthropist Michael Steinhardt bought two-thirds of the magazine with Roger Hertog. CanWest bought into the magazine in 2006, and later bought out Steinhardt and Hertog.Peretz, who is a JTA board member, is expected to remain The New Republic’s editor in chief as the magazine unveils a redesign March 9.
