Conservative seminary names new provost

Alan Cooper will become provost of the Jewish Theological Seminary on July 1. The New York City-based seminary announced Tuesday that Cooper, currently chairman of JTS’ Bible department, will replace Wertheimer, who has held the position for a decade. Cooper, who was the first person to held professorships at both JTS and the Union Theological Seminary, has taught at Hebrew Union College in New York and McMaster University in Canada. He is a graduate of Columbia and Yale universities. “In his position as chief academic officer, I am confident that Alan Cooper’s administrative experience, coupled with his deep commitment to academic excellence, will benefit the entire JTS community,” Chancellor-elect Arnold Eisen said.
