Ten thousand Brazilian Jews last night filled an open-air stadium here to pay tribute to Moshe Sharett, Israel Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In his address, which was frequently punctuated by applause and cheers, Mr. Sharett declared that the United Nations had recognized an accomplished fact when it granted Israel independence since the Jews had been building up the country for 70 years. In his hour-long address, Mr. Sharett urged his audience to give their sons and daughters a Jewish education and to teach them the Hebrew language.
Mr. Sharett today gave a reception for 800 active members of the Zionist Federation and United Israel Appeal of Brazil and urged them to intensify their activities in behalf of the Zionist cause and Israel. At a press conference earlier, he expressed the opinion that the Mapai-General Zionist government coalition in Israel would last for a long time and that the centrists would not bolt the coalition.
This afternoon he had a visit from Dr. Oswaldo Aranha, former Brazilian Foreign Minister and head of Brazil’s delegation to the United Nations when the UN voted to partition Palestine and establish an independent Jewish State.
