The Hungarian newspaper Magyarsag today reported that police raids ordered by the Ministry of the Interior in Northeast Hungary have resulted in the detention of 3,367 persons who were found to be residing in the country without legal permission.
The raids were carried out with the express intention of controlling the number and status of aliens in Hungary. An important role in the drive was played by the Magyarsag, which has been conducting a campaign against the alleged infiltration of East European Jews into Hungary. As a direct result of the effort by the newspaper, a large number of youths studying at the Yeshivath in Papa and elsewhere were expelled.
Of the total number of persons held by the police in the drive, 1,255 are listed as Czechs, 1,052 Poles, 390 Rumanians, 233 Austrians, 197 Germans, 126 Serbs and 114 of various other nationalities. They include Roman Catholics, Protestants, Greek Orthodox and even Moslems.
