Some 4,000 persons at a public rally here last night sponsored by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada adopted a resolution protesting against “systematic attacks on the fundamentals of the Jewish religion” in Israel.
The resolution listed four “serious dangers” to religious Jewry in Israel as: the conscription of Orthodox women; the “planned abolition” of the religious educational system; the “planned promulgation” of a law instituting government control over yeshivoth and other institutions; and, the “introduction of public desecration of the Sabbath in communication and transportation.”
In the event that the protest to the Israel Government proves ineffective in ending the “attacks,” the resolution instructed the rabbinical group to “publicly declare itself opposed to the official public appeals of the State of Israel” and to “establish an independent Israel campaign to support the religious community in Israel.”
