Poles and Jews to the number of 60,000 have registered at the American Consulate in Warsaw and are awaiting visas in the order of their application for permits to sail for America. Poland’s quota, under the present law, is thus filled for two years to come and if the Johnson bill is passed the quota will have been filled for the coming four years. The Consulate has been in receipt of a great number of letters from Senators and Congressmen in the United States asking that special favor be shown certain Jewish immigrants. Occasionally the letters ask favoritism for a Pole, but the great majority refer to Jews. It is estimated by immigration authorities in the Baltic States that steamship companies have collected approximately $40,000,000 in prepaid passages from American relatives of 300,000 would-be immigrants.
