A former Israeli chief rabbi called on religious soldiers not to evacuate settlers. “It is a transgression, it is forbidden, and they must tell their commanders so,” Rabbi Avraham Shapira, who now runs the influential Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem, said in comments to a religious journal published Thursday. “It would be like desecrating Shabbat or eating carrion or non-kosher meat.”
