Human relations problems, particularly those involving racial and religious prejudice, can be “the most explosive evil of our time,” Herbert B. Ehrmann, president of the American Jewish Committee, warned here last night.
He stressed that “government on all levels–city, state and federal–have a primary duty to initiate, encourage and support research and function in the many diverse areas of human relations.” He declared that voluntary agencies alone cannot handle this potentially dangerous problem. Mr. Ehrmann spoke at the annual meeting of the AJC’s New York chapter.
Mr. Ehrmann declared that “the urgent requirements of national security” demand “a massive research and action program” into the causes of intergroup and interracial problems by the government and private agencies. “The young science of human relations must have a top priority in our government’s budgets if we are to find new ways of dealing with the compelling problems of group hostility and social upheavals,” he said.
