A decision to ask the Israel Government to make a special provision in its new law on education to protect the Orthodox independent school system in the Jewish state was adopted here at a meeting of the executive of the World Agudah Organization.
The executive considered as unsatisfactory a proposal submitted by I.M. Levin, Orthodox Minister for Social Services in Israel, regarding the question of exempting Yeshiva students in the Jewish state from military service. The proposal suggested that the law should not incorporate the exemption but should give the Defense Minister the power to grant such exemption at his discretion.
The Agudah executive decided to notify Premier Ben Gurion of its dissatisfaction with the proposal. At the some time, it agreed to a suggestion that peacetime service for women in Israel should be placed on a voluntary rather than a compulsory basis.
