The Agudath Israel has succeeded in obtaining control of the Warsaw Jewish Community, the largest Jewish Community in Europe, by consolidating against the Zionists all the smaller groups on the newly-elected Board of the Community, the non-Party Hassidim, the Folkists (Jewish People’s Party), the Jewish Artisans, and the Assimilationists.
The Augdist leader in Poland, Mr. Itche Meir Levin, the son-in-law of Rabbi Alter, the famous Gerer Rebbe, was elected to the chair.
Ex-Deputy Schipper, speaking in the name of the Zionist fraction, lodged an objection to the procedure. He complained that the Agudah had secured a victory in the communal elections by making use of Paragraph 20 of the election law, excluding non-religious Jews from the right to vote, and the Zionists refused to accept responsibility for this state of affairs. The Zionists then left the meeting and refused to take part in the elections to the Presidium and the Executive.
The Zionists made efforts to gain the support of the smaller groups in order to enable them to establish a Zionist regime in opposition to the Agudah, but the J.T.A. understands that the Agudah had forestalled them, having made very far-reaching promises to the smaller groups, which the Zionists could not better.
A Commission has been appointed to constitute the new Executive of the Warsaw Jewish Community, the members being two Agudists, Messrs. Trockenheim and Mase; Mr. Burgin, of the Jewish Artisans’ Union; Mr. Kohn, of the Assimilationists, and Mr. Feigenblatt, of the non-Agudist Hassidim.
