A Tel Aviv magistrate issued a three-day detention order today for Yaacov Malin, an El Al employe, while police investigate charges of alleged smuggling against him. Malin deposited a valise reportedly containing over $1 million in banknotes in the Lod Airport locker room after arriving on a flight from Nairobi. Kenya.
The judge expressed doubt that smuggling charges against Malin would stand up in court inasmuch as there is no evidence that he committed a crime under Israeli law. Israel does not require persons arriving in the country to declare money in their possession. Malin told the court that he had been asked by friends in Nairobi to transfer the suitcase to a Swiss bank and that he brought it to Israel in transit to Switzerland.
