American Jewish Congress Denies Endorsement of Proposed Roumanian Loan

The following statement was given out by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress, in connection with a report relating to the proposed loan to Roumania which was published, in the “New York Times” on May 26.

“The ‘New York Times’ of this date unwittingly conveys the impression that as President of the American Jewish Congress, I expressed my approval of the contemplated loan to Roumania. In the telephonic interview which the ‘Times’ representative requested, no mention was made either by him or by me of the proposed loan. I dealt solely with the negotiations between the Roumanian minister and the heads of the United Roumanian Jews of America, which included the insistence that all emphasis be placed upon the duty of amelioration by the Roumanian government of conditions affecting the minorities, especially conditions relating to Jewish minorities throughout Roumania.

“Though Roumanian Jews may find it needful to take some position with respect to the loan, we of the American Jewish Congress do not and cannot touch upon such problems as have no relation to the business of the Congress. I trust that the United Roumanian Jews of America will find vindication of their faith that the treaty rights of the Jews and other minorities are to be scrupulously observed by every Roumanian government, and that injustice to Jews is to be blotted out forever in the enlarged Roumania.”
