The annual report issued by Amnesty International criticised “the review procedure in regard to long term Arab detainees” in Israel but noted that the overall number of administrative detainees has dropped. Amnesty International, a private organization which aids political prisoners in all countries, reported that “After meeting with the Israeli Ambassador, we were informed that allegations of torture (of Arab prisoners) were unfounded.”
The organization reported that it had intervened on behalf of a member of the Black Panthers in Israel and secured his release from prison. It also “adopted” a young Israeli conscientious objector sentenced to prison for refusing to serve in the armed forces. It was believed that the CO was Giora Newman. The report said that Amnesty International “continues to work for Guilio Hassan, a Jew arrested In Libya in Sept. 1969 and still imprisoned without trial.”
More than 5000 persons attended an outdoor memorial service in Nathan Philips Square in Toronto for the 11 slain Israeli athletes. The service was sponsored by the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Canadian Zionist Federation and B’nai B’rith.
